Under the Waves:
Why Start This Project?
Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the amount of plastic waste thrown in our oceans has risen to more than 25,000 tons. On a global scale, 129 billion face masks are used and thrown away into the environment every month. This is due to the improper disposal of surgical masks and other personal protective equipment (PPEs). Before the pandemic, the world was already producing 2.7 million tons of plastic waste every year, and all 9 billion tons of plastic produced since the 1950s are still on the planet.
If this issue persists, it will have long-term effects on the environment and on future generations. It will not get better if we do not instill urgency and awareness now.

About the Project
The class of 12-Curie of Miriam College High School decided to create an online virtual art gallery entitled, The New SEA-t UP: The Pandemic Under the Sea.
This online art gallery will feature different artworks in a variety of mediums that aim to spread awareness regarding the issue of plastic waste in our oceans during this pandemic.
